Risks of effect of diapirism development stages on oil and gas content in Shamakhi-Gobustan and Kura-Gabirri depressions

Relevance. Diapir folds and mud volcano distribution areas that related to a high stage of their development are associated with negative geostructural elements developed in orogens. It should be noted that compressional stresses arising in the collision zones of the Greater Caucasus and Lesser Caucasus play a major role in the formation of the structural-tectonic plan of the Kura-Gabirri interfluve depression. The thickness of the sedimentary layer in the depression is 12 km, and 41% of the sedimentary layer section is consists of clay rock. The geodynamic conditions of the depression and the lithofacies composition of the sedimentary layer are quite favorable for the development of diapirism and mud volcanism. Since the Shamakhi-Gobustan depression is located in the crest position zone of the southwestern limb of the Greater Caucasus, the geodynamic and tectonic processes occurring in this mountain fold system are intensively reflected in the Shamakhi-Gobustan synclinorium, leading to the development of diapir-type folds, overthrust, nappe-type structures and mud volcanism in its structure. Aim. To determine the intensity of compressional stresses arising along the tectonic zones of the area of the Kura-Gabirri and Shamakhi-Gobustan depressions of the South Caspian megabasin and the effect of the lithofacies composition of the sedimentary layer on the development of cryptodiapir, diapir and other folds, as well as the manifestation of mud volcanism. Methods. The research method is based on the analysis of the change in the intensity of compressional stresses arising from geodynamic conditions over the territory and the impact of the lithofacies composition of the sedimentary layer on the morphology of cryptodiapir, diapir and other folds, as well as on the manifestation of mud volcanism. Conclusions. İt was identified that from north to south, the surface of Mesozoic sediments are subsided, the thickness of the Cenozoic complex sharply increase, and due to its horizontal displacement the tectonic stresses reach their maxsimum level in the southern subsiding areas (South Gobustan, Alat Range). As a result, the Pliocene structural level is represented by sandy-clayey sediments of a very large thickness (5 km). The clay diapirs and folds located here are configurated by Paleogene-Miocene and Pliocene sediments. Therefore, the largest mud volcanoes are located in these areas.
