Modified impedance method for measuring the material elasticity modulus
Relevance. In engineering, there are a number of tasks, in which it is required to quickly and accurately determine the properties of materials. At the same time, it is important to receive information not in a comparative format, but in real physical quantities corresponding to generally accepted units of measurement. Polymers are widely used in engineering as a structural material. However, over time, they can break down under the impact of various factors such as temperature, solar radiation and humidity. This makes it necessary to monitor the physical and mechanical properties of polymer structures in the oil and gas industry in order to predict their service life. It is necessary to develop a method that will allow determining the physical and mechanical properties of materials without destroying them. This method should be convenient for one-way access to objects and have minimal impact on the material. Aim. Improvement of the impedance method for determining the physical and mechanical properties of materials that can only be accessed from one side. Objects. The design of the ultrasonic emitter makes it possible to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the load materials with high accuracy. Investigation of the behavior of the physical model of the ultrasonic emitter–load system. Methods. Experimental studies of an oscillatory system consisting of an ultrasonic emitter and a load made it possible to construct an amplitude-frequency response and determine the frequency range necessary to study the physical and mechanical properties of the materials from which the load is made. Results. The authors have discovered a unique physical feature of the oscillatory system. At frequencies close to resonance, the signals of the piezoactuator force and the acceleration of the pusher and the body of the ultrasonic radiator are purely harmonic in nature. Experimental studies were carried out with a resonant type ultrasonic emitter. The radiator operated in two modes: with a short circuit and with a load in the form of polymethylmethacrylate plates of various thicknesses. The samples were tested with three-point bending. The analysis of theoretical and experimental data made it possible to verify the method for determining the material elasticity modulus based on a modified impedance method. Conclusion. Analysis of the research results demonstrated that the modified impedance method used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of materials provides reliable results in determining the elasticity modulus of polymethylmethacrylate plates of various thicknesses. The error in calculating the modulus of elasticity does not exceed 5%. The technique, based on the modified pulse method of non-destructive testing, allows determining the elasticity modulus of materials with one-way access to objects with minimal impact on the material. It can be used in both laboratory and industrial environments.
