Modeling and performance analysis of a synchronous reluctance motor with ferrite magnets and a starting short-circuited winding with different numbers of slots per pole and phase

Relevance. There is a growing need to improve the energy efficiency of electric motors without the use of rare-earth magnets in typical non-variable speed electric drive applications such as pumps, fans and compressors. Direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motors can have a high energy efficiency class. In addition, their production does not use expensive and scarce rare earth permanent magnets. Such machines can be a promising replacement for relatively inefficient IE3 class asynchronous motors and synchronous motors with expensive rare-earth magnets. At the same time, the development of direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motors has its own features and problems associated with the low coercivity of ferrite magnets and the limited starting capability of synchronous motors when directly powered from the network. Aim. To develop a direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motor (rated power 0.75 kW, rated speed 1500 rpm) of IE5 energy efficiency class and to study its steady-state characteristics under load and start-up characteristics. Comparison of characteristics of different engine design options. Methods. Mathematical modeling, two-dimensional finite element method. Results and conclusions. The authors have developed a new design of the direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motors, the calculated characteristics of which correspond to the energy efficiency class of IE5. Based on the finite element method, the authors obtained the results of modeling of two variants of the new design of the direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motors with a different number of slots per pole and phase. The authors studied the starting characteristics of the direct-on-line ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance motors. It was shown that the motor starts reliably at rated load torque and a tripled moment of rotor inertia. It was confirmed that the considered electric machine with the obtained performances can be an alternative to asynchronous motors and synchronous motors with rare earth magnets in the target application.
