Distribution of iron and manganese in the natural waters of Samarovsky Chugas (Khanty-Mansiysk)

Relevance. Fresh superficial and underground waters are very often used for drinking purposes, especially in settlements without centralized water supply. On the territory of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous district – Ugra, there are many small remote villages, ancestral lands, pastures, where the local population uses the waters of rivers, lakes, or underground waters for drinking purposes (wells or springs, if any, are unloaded on the surface near the settlement). Aim. Study of the concentration levels of total iron and manganese and identification of sources of their entry into fresh underground waters of the Samarovsky Chugas Natural Park. Objects. Fresh waters, at different stages of chemical composition formation, starting with snow (melt waters), surface waters and ending with underground waters taken from wells in the Khanty-Mansiysk territory. Methods. The analysis of chemical composition of natural waters were realized by the following chemical analysis methods: titrimetry, potentiometry, photocolorimetry, etc. Results. Formation of underground waters chemical composition is due to the intensity of water exchange, the lithological structure peculiarities of the territory, as well as the geochemical conditions of the environment. Meltwaters are characterized by minimum contents of iron and manganese (atmospheric stage of formation of chemical composition of underground waters). At the biogenic stage, the soil layer accumulates chemical elements in the aquatic environment with a change in the acid-base balance and total mineralization of surface waters. Further, at the lithogenic stage, rocks rich in iron and manganese are containing the source of entry of the analyzed elements (goethite, siderite, rhodochrosite, pyrochroite). The level of the analyzed elements in the waters reaches an equilibrium state, after which iron and manganese begin to precipitate out of solution, turning into a solid phase.
