Modern methods for assessing the bearing capacity of shallow foundation bases
Relevance. The engineering and geological structure of survey sites, as a rule, involves working with heterogeneous, multi-layered, weak soils, in which case classical approaches to determining the bearing capacity of the foundation can give significant errors, leading to overestimated or underestimated estimates. Aim. Comparison of traditional methods for calculating the bearing capacity of shallow foundations based on the theory of marginal soil equilibrium, with methods based on numerical analysis, as well as a demonstration of the application of a probabilistic stochastic approach in engineering geology. Methods. The calculations performed on the basis of theory of marginal soil equilibrium (calculation according to SP 22.13330.2016, Terzaghi formula) and based on numerical analysis (limit analysis in ABC, limit analysis in Optum G2, discontinuity layout optimization, random finite element method, increasing load to achieve stability loss in Plaxis). Results and conclusions. The results obtained demonstrate the significant effect of the chosen calculation method on the assessment of the bearing capacity of the soil base. With a simplified geological structure, the methods based on the theory of marginal soil equilibrium show the highest values of bearing capacity, compared with methods based on numerical analysis, varying from 1408 to 1477 kPa and from 940 to 1366 kPa, respectively. The paper shows that the surface of soil destruction in most cases lies deeper than the depth of the compressible stratum determined by the current set of rules. The use of the random finite element method illustrates the application of a probabilistic stochastic approach, on the basis of which the probability of loss of stability of the soil base is determined and a quantitative assessment of the reliability of the lithotechnical system under consideration is given.
