Development of solar and wind energy in Siberia with the participation of China

The article examines the prospects for implementing renewable energy sources in the Siberian region by leveraging China expertise and technologies. Relevance. The study is highly relevant due to the global shift toward a low-carbon economy, the need to diversify Russian energy sector, and Siberia vast potential for renewable energy sources. China, as the world leader in renewable energy sources production and utilization, emerges as a strategic partner capable of accelerating this process through its technological and investment capabilities. Siberia proximity to China and the growing bilateral trade turnover ($245 billion in 2024) underscore the importance of cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the commitments of the Paris Agreement. Aim. To assess the potential for renewable energy sources development in Siberia by drawing on Chinese experience, analyzing the region climatic, geographical, and economic features, and proposing recommendations for joint projects. Methods. Comparative analysis of Russian and Chinese energy strategies, statistical data from Russian Ministry of Energy, Chinese National Energy Administration, IRENA, and the IEA, alongside an examination of Siberia climatic and geographical conditions. Results. Siberia has significant renewable energy sources potential (wind – 200–300 GW, solar – 1200–1400 kWh/m² annually), yet renewable energy sources accounts for only 2.1 GW of the region 50 GW total capacity. China, with a renewable energy sources capacity of 1479 GW and $271 billion invested in 2023, offers a successful model applicable to Siberia. Conclusions. Collaboration with China, encompassing technology transfers, investments, and cross-border energy networks, could reduce CO2 emissions by 50–100 million tons annually, create 5000–10000 jobs, and generate $250–500 million yearly from energy exports. Recommendations include strengthening state support, adapting Chinese technologies, and developing local equipment production.
